This is a tailor-made job. My actual
employer is a company called ISS (Information Systems Support, Inc.) out of
California, with a local office here in Bremerton, a great staff to support me
and a really great Group Manager, Mary Krogh, but the real job location is at the Federal Aviation Administration,
Northwest Mountain Region, Airports Division in Renton, WA.
Without giving out too much information
(you know how the government is) my role here is to handle all of the server and
client issues from simple maintenance to troubleshooting to disaster recovery
(which has happened!) to investigating WAN problems to ???? (get the picture?).
Our division is mostly comprised of Microsoft operating systems
although we have a wide variety of non-MS software. In addition to the Regional
Office here, I've also been given the responsibility for the whole of the
Northwest Mountain Region; a seven state area. It's not as daunting as you might
think since the whole region I've built in remote control and can now administer
the entire domain remotely from the Regional Office or from my home office. The
are four offices, the Division, Seattle ADO
(Airports District Office), Denver ADO, and Helena ADO. I've
found that user education here cuts way down on my work load! I always try to
teach along with fix.
Another part of the job here is web
technology. The Airports Division has their own Internet server along with a
separate Intranet server. I really knew very little about web technology when I
started here but that has changed. The websites used to be published solely through Front
Page 2000 but have since moved to other more capable programs. I have given up
most of the main web work to my FAA counterpart who handles the web and database
work. It seems that as technology has become more difficult and we rush headlong
into it, Mike and I have settled down in our own expertise.
The folks here are great and the atmosphere
is super. As you could guess, being the government, the salary started out slow
but has risen to market standard. This is a fun place to
work and if it ever stops being fun or challenging, I'll be available.
